Custom Aquarium Hardscape

Custom aquarium hardscape with hidden filtration

25th June 2020

The tank is now up and running with the hardscape installed, substrate down and the hidden equipment all doing its job in the background. The overall aim was to end up with something much cleaner and more integrated than a typical off-the-shelf setup, with the technical side kept out of sight as much as possible.

I’m being careful not to rush the final setup. The tank will be left running for a long time, with plenty of water changes before any stock are added, just to make sure everything has properly cured and settled.

For a tank that started out as a cheap Facebook Marketplace find, it turned into a much bigger custom build than I originally expected.

The hardscape is now back into the tank and starting to come together properly. The rear background and column sections have been bonded in with aquarium-safe silicone as the hardscape is buoyant.

With the main hardscape in place, I’ve been working on the hidden functional parts of the setup. Filtration is kept out of sight in the cabinet below using an Oase canister filter with an integrated heater.

I’ve also built airstones into the two front pillars and the airlines will be routed under the substrate and behind the background.

I’ve started coating the foam with a cement slurry applied in multiple layers. The intention is to toughen the whole structure up and improve the surface texture.

I have now finished carving the foam hardscape and the overall layout is where I want it. The main background, cave section and front pieces are all shaped, while still working around the hidden filter hardware.

At this stage it is still just polystyrene, but the final form of the hardscape is now there.

The basic hardscape layout is now in place, and I’ve carried on refining the shapes by carving directly into the polystyrene. Most of it is being done with a knife and whatever else is close to hand, just trying to make the surfaces feel less artificial and more like one continuous structure.

The main thing at the moment is getting the overall composition where I want it, while still making sure the layout works around the hidden inlet, outlet and the rest of the hardware.

I’ve started putting together a custom hardscape for this tank using polystyrene as a base. From the beginning I want the inside of the tank to look as clean as possible, so the layout is being designed around hiding equipment rather than trying to disguise it afterwards.

I already have the canister filter for the setup, and one of the main reasons for the cave section is to hide the filter inlet and outlet. At this stage I’m mostly working out the layout and proportions, carving the main background and front sections and checking how everything sits before committing to the final structure.
